Haiti Trip

OUR NONPROFIT PARTNER: HAITIAN AMERICAN CAUCUS - HAITI

WHY HAITI?

When young people are asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up," the answer is often a this huge, amazing dream. And when we're little, those dreams are encouraged. But over time, survival mode and lack of resources take over and  those dreams are dismissed as unattainable or unimportant in comparison to more immediate needs.

In Haiti, this phenomenon is magnified exponentially by extreme poverty and the crippling effects of the 2010 earthquake that left many families without homes, jobs, or options. After the emergent situation was over, and many relief organizations had moved on to other countries, HAC Haiti began talking with the community about issues that affected their families. While the short-term disaster relief was helpful, what was missing was access to quality and affordable primary education, professional development opportunities for students, teachers, uneducated youth, and illiterate adults, as well as economic empowerment opportunities.

Since then they've been committed to providing opportunities for the community of Croix des Bouquets and rural communities around the country.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Haiti Got it x Purpose Driven Passport Good Samaritan initiative is to empower Haitian students and young adults with skills, resources, and funding that allows them to complete their education, start small businesses, and create long-term sustainable change in their local communities. Our trip will use a skills-based volunteering model to match the skills of applicants with the career paths of students and other school needs.

OUR APPROACH: THE DREAM LAB

The Dream Lab is a week-long intensive course, in which students will have rigorous courses including English, Computer Literacy, Business Plan Development, Resume Building, Interview Skills & Attire, Mock Interviews, and Community Service. Volunteers selected for this year's trip will have the opportunity to shape the curriculum and lead the training while in Haiti. The week will conclude with an opportunity for the students to pitch their business ideas in front of a panel of judges. The winner(s) will receive a grant from Purpose Driven Passports.
